Status of Women in Haryana

Some Reflections

Abstract

This study aimed to determine through empirical study the status of women, both rural and urban and also tried to investigate the reasons which are responsible for the low status of women in Haryana. The study was conducted in three districts of Haryana viz. Kurukshetra, Mewat and Hissar. The districts selected for the sample represent Haryana, Kurukshetra in the North, Hissar in the south and Mewat in the Eastern part of the state. Stratified Random Sampling Technique was used for data collection. The unit of the study was women/girls from three age groups viz. 18-25 years, 26-35 years and 36-50 years. From Kurukshetra and Mewat districts each, 3 blocks were selected and from Hissar district, 5 blocks were selected. These blocks were further divided into rural and urban areas. A total of 990 respondents – 45 from rural area and 45 from urban area from each of the block were selected randomly. A questionnaire was designed keeping in view the objectives of the study. Data was collected with the help of a team of two investigators in each district and it was analysed through SPSS software.
